NineDot Energy opens its largest battery site, 20 MW in the Bronx

NineDot Energy has inaugurated a 20 MW battery energy storage system in Hunts Point, in the Bronx, the largest site in its portfolio. The ribbon-cutting took place in late September 2026. According to the company, the system can deliver nearly 20 MW to about 20,000 homes during peak grid hours.

The batteries are supplied by Tesla, according to Solar Power World. The site replaces a former fuel oil trucking depot in a district with heavy industrial pollution: more than 10,000 diesel trucks cross the area every day, and two high-emission gas-fired peaker plants operate in nearby Port Morris. In 2023 asthma-related emergency visits in Hunts Point and Mott Haven were two to three times the city average.

The role of the battery is to cover the peaks that today are served by those plants. During the heat wave of 1-4 July 2026 NineDot's fleet exported nearly 34 MW from nine projects in the hours of highest demand.

With Hunts Point the company operates 11 projects at six locations in Staten Island and the Bronx, for a total of 39 MW. It has more than 60 further projects in development and a pipeline above 1 GW, and its stated goal is to have 400 MW in operation, under construction or in development by the end of 2026. Interesting Engineering reports that full operation of the site is expected by summer 2027, while the company describes it as already operational: the two statements may refer to different phases of commissioning.

The project shows the model of distributed storage in dense cities: sites of a few megawatts on small urban plots, close to demand, instead of large plants outside the city. For New York, which must replace ageing peaker plants, it is one of the few options that can be built inside the five boroughs.
